Assingment #1 Irony- an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.

Metaphor- A figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance.

Example #1: But it was like looking into the foaming rapids of the river. Page 96. Why- Because they were not in or near a river, they were in a blizzard and they compared the foam to the snow.

Example #2: Like staring into white darkness. Page 96. White can't be darkness but they were walking in a blizzard so all they could see was white so it was like a black darkness but white. Sydneye- These are great comparisons, but when you use the word 'like' they become similes rather than metaphors. Mrs. M 5/4

Stereotype- to characterize or regard as a stereotype.

Example #1: A toothless woman in a ragged black shawl limped toward them. "Dirty Jews," she muttered, and spat on the ground. Page 21. This is a stereotype because the Jew were and are not dirty. People only say and believe that because the government or Hitler has lead them to believe that Jew are dirty.

Example #2: "How can a Nazi study Torah?" Page 62. This is a stereotype that the Nazis can't study the Torah because they are Nazi but Herr Schmidt was probably one of the few exceptions. Excellent examples!

Allusion- a passing or casual reference.

Example #1: Eva put on her layers of clothes while Papa went to the bakery and brought back their bread ration. Page 20. This is an allusion because it makes her look like she just fat but actually she has many clothes on so the Germans don't become suspicious.

Example #2: They ate half of it together, the Papa wrapped the rest for Eva to eat on the train. This is an allusion because Papa wrapped the bread for Eva to hide, so the Germans don't see that she has food when she isn't supposed to.

Personification- the attribution of a personal nature or character to inanimate objects or abstract notions.

Symbolism- the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. Example #1: "39227" read the girl. "From now on that is your name," said the gaurd "Put it around your neck! Memorize it!" Page 29. This is symbolism because these numbers represents the girl's name to the guards at the camp.

Example #2: She pointed to one of the three-story buildings. "Barrack 2." Page 29. This is symbolism because the two represents which story or level the girl is to live on. Sydneye- Your first example gives support for the symbolism. The second one is not as strong. Mrs. M 5/4

Assignment #2

.EVA.

Internal Conflicts-

1. She knows knows that her family has been taken from the ghetto.

2. Eva is very worried that Rachel will get sick or she will get sick and no one will be there for Rachel.

3. She worries that Rachel will not survive and she will be alone.

1. Eva heard this when she was in the bathroom with three other girls and overheard them talking. They said that all the Jews in the bendiz ghetto had been rounded up and taken to a camp. She is now worried what have become of them and if they are still alive. She also is worries and debates whether to tell her already stressed out sister, Rachel, this tragetic news. The cause of all this is because the Nazis are persecuting Jews and she is not with her family to actually know.

2. If Rachel become sick then Eva might also get sick and they both won't have nyone to care for them. If Rachel becomes sixk they might not think she is song enouh to work and they might transfer her to a different camp. Rachel become sick alot because she has a lung disease that makes her weaker than the rest of the girls. Eva needs achel to stay healthy because then she will stay at the camp and be with Eva to help suppor Eva. This is a big worry because the Nazis do not treat them with good healthy conditions and everyone become sick fast.

3. If Rachel does not survive Eva will be alone and have no one to support her through this horrible time. With Rachel dead then Eva would have no support. With no support then Eva might let herself go and become sick herself and give up. If Eva gives up she would probably not survive and that can't happen because she is the main character. Rachel get sick easily beause of her lung condition and ift is a high risk that this path could be followed.

External Conflicts-

1.The guards keep reducing the already small ration portions.

2. Because of the Reich they do not have a train to ride half way to the factory.

3. They would be transferred to another camp.

1. The girls were beomeing very weak and skinny because the guards kept reducing the already small ration portions. If they kept reducing them the girls would soon starve and become sick or too weak to work. If too weak they might be killed or transferred. The cause of this because of the Nazis hatred for these people nad wanted to torture them or basically kill them. If the rations were reduced more there would be no food and that is what it basically came to.

2. Because of the Reich the girls now had to walkt the full ten miles to work in the factory. This walk is very long for already starving girls and it is very cold during winter too. Because of this cold the girls will become even weaker and might die more often. The cold also rouses diseasesand spread them faster because the girls will be enclosed together alot more. If the girls get more sicker and weaker they won't be able to work efficently and that might lead to tranfer or

death.

3. If they are tranferred to another camp that camp might be Aushwitz. If it is Auchwitz then they will probablybe killed right when the arrive because Aushwitz was a extermination camp not a labor camp. The reason they would be transferred there because they were too weak to work or were about to die anyways. If they were about to die they would probably pass away on the way over there anyways. This would be awful becuase they would know what was going to happen and if they were alone without friends or family then it would be worse.

Isn't that a metaphor not a slang? and sorry.
.Annie.
Internal Conflicts-

1. Annie is worried that all of her Susans or her dolls will be lonely when she is gone.
2. Annie is concerned that she will not see Lisa again when Lisa and Ruth go of to the charity camp.
3. Annie is also worried that they will all be separated to different families and won't see each other anymore.

1. Just like any other four year old girl that loves dolls doesn't want to leave them. Annie is allowed to only take two dolls with her and she chooses one but does not want to leave any of the others. All her dolls are named Susan because that is her favorite name and she loves all them equally. Lisa however also owns one dolls called a bride doll and Annie adores that doll. So in the end Lisa gives the bride doll to Annie so everyone is happy and not arguing when there isn't time for it. In the end Annie is happy with her dolls and plays with them constant on the train to Switzerland.
2. Annie and Lisa are very close just like most sisters. However, Annie is not old enough to go to the children charity camp with Lisa and Ruth. Annie become very sad because she worries the worst and that is that she will not see Lisa. Not seeing Lisa again would probably be like losing a part of herself to Annie, which is a lot for a four year old girl to handle. But soon enough they are united again but Annie is now off to live with a family in Zurich.
3. Annie loves her family and does not want to be separated from them because what little girl wants to leave to mother. Annie though is sent to another family to live with while they are in Switzerland. Annie is sent to a family that has a baby boy and neighbors that are Annie's age. She is content there but of course she misses her family. Who wouldn't?

External Conflicts-
1. If the Platts were caught and sent back to Germany.
2. She can't remember who her dad is.

3. Annie is sent to a different family while they were in Switzerland.

1. If they are caught they will probably be sent to back to Germany. If they are sent back to Germany then since they were Jews they might be killed or sent to a camp. While the camp were horrible and cruel and well death isn't great either. This would not be a good option.
2. If a child forgets a parent that is really bad. This is horrible if a child doesn't know her father that she has lived with for her whole life. Eventually they should remember.
In Annie's case she does remember her forgotten father over time. But it is still aweful that she would even forget him even in her situtation. Imagine how the father felt when his own daughter didn't remeber him.
CHILDREN WHO ARE ANNIE'S AGE MIGHT OFTEN FORGET A PARENT IF SEPARATED FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME. YES, IT'S UNFORTUNATE, BUT IF A CHILD'S SURROUNDING ARE CHANGED, THE CHILD ADAPTS TO THE CHANGES VERY QUICKLY. ANNIE CANNOT BE BLAMES FOR FORGETTING HER FATHER GIVEN THE CIRCUMSTANCES.

THE NUMBER 3 IN BOTH ANSWERS ARE THE SAME... WAS THAT INTENTIONAL? SHOULDN'T BE.
LOTS OF SPELLING ERRORS AND RUN-ONS; ALWAYS REREAD ASSIGNMENTS WHEN POSTING. FINGERS SOMETIMES FLY OVER THE KEYBOARD, BUT MINDS ARE EVEN FASTER. THIS CAUSES MISTAKES THAT CAN EASILY BE CAUGHT BY REREADING.

There really isn't anything else to say. Is there?

Assignment #3

The Youth of Hitler was one of the many organizations that supported Hitler's actions but in the youth of Germany. The Youth of Hitler exist in 1922 to 1945 and had about 2.3 million supporters in the year of 1933. That is a huge number and exactly what Hitler wanted and needed. He needed these numbers in this age group because he knew that if all the generations supported him then that means that his legacy will last for years to come after he dies. We all knew that that wasn't true but I am writing in a perspective of back in around 1933. Hitler wanted this so he would be even more powerful and some who was close to being like him can rule when he is gone and they will beliefs and the Nazis will rule forever. That was Hitler's intention all along. Even though he didn't succeed he thought he had won in his own mind. In his mind he had a perfect world being formed around him with all generations of Germany on his side. Winning to him was to have young and old follow him and worship him forever and for all Germans to agree with his veiws and values. A perfect world was total German domination and no other races besides the Germans. The support of the Youth of Hitler help him complete this well in his mind that is.

GOOD OBSERVATIONS! DON'T FORGET TO REREAD ANSWERS; YOU CHANGE TENSES THROUGHOUT YOUR ANSWER AND HAVE LOTS OF ERRORS IN SPELLING, PUNCTUATION, ETC.

Assignment #4

1.Bandwagon: A large, decorated wagon for carry music in a politcal rally or parade.
WHILE THIS IS ONE DEFINITION FOR A BANDWAGON, THIS IS A VERY LITERAL ONE. THIS IS AN EXPRESSION THAT HAS MORE IMPLICATIONS IN A COMMUNIST COUNTRY. TALK TO YOUR GROUP; DECIDE WHAT THIS IS AND HOW IT RELATES TO THE STORY.

2.Scapegoat: A person or group made to bear blame for others in their place.

1. This relates to my second novel because when they are leaving to go to Switzerland they are stalled for a little bit by a parade. The parade was for the Nazi party and there probably be different bandwagons there with Nazi symbols and beliefs on them. In the book the guard that let them pass even said that Hitler was to speak that day. It was a celebrate to promote Nazism and everything about the Nazis and it was not a place for the main character to be because they were Jewish.

2. This relates to my first novel because when some of the prisoners escape the other prisoners are all punished. These prisoners get the train that takes them five miles to the factory taken away. They are scapegoats because none of them did anything and they were punished for other peoples' rebellion which is exactly what a scapegoat is. It was wrong and they shouldn't have been punished but then again we're talking about Nazis.

GOOD!
